Teaching An AI To Beat Video Games Still Takes Human Imagination

In 2013, researchers at the artificial intelligence research company DeepMind in London set out to create a system of AI networks that could master any Atari game. And they had excellent results, with their system outperforming skilled humans at exponential rates. However, one game with some novel gameplay characteristics, Montezuma’s Revenge (1984), left the system totally stumped, unable to score a single point. This delightfully retro animation explores how the DeepMind team was finally able to conquer the game by borrowing concepts from human psychology. Further, the video explores the ways in which AI development remains a deeply human enterprise…

Top 5 AI Trends To Watch Out For In 2023

AI is being adapted by businesses large and small at a growing pace. It has made lives easier, process efficient and even bridging the skill gap. According to an IBM report 35% of companies are currently using AI and 42% reported exploring the same. The global artificial intelligence market reached a value of around USD 1.2 trillion in 2020. The market is further expected to grow at a CAGR of about 23% in the forecast period of 2023-2028 to reach a value of about USD 6 trillion by 2026. Here are the top 5 AI trends to watch out for in 2023:…

Why You Must Read These 5 Artificial Intelligence Books

Computer scientist Mark Lee picks out his top science books on the subject of AI, machine learning and intelligent algorithms. Artificial intelligence (AI) is the process of teaching a computer to carry out tasks that typically only a human brain could do, but there is much more to it that trying to crunch numbers on a computer. Artificial intelligence is everywhere, from the robots manufacturing cars in factories to the smartphone in your pocket, and understanding what AI actually is will give you a better understanding of the technology that surrounds us. Professor Mark Lee is a computer scientist at…

The Metaverse: How To Build Something We Can All Gain From

Is the metaverse more than just a catchy buzzword? Can companies and regulators build something safe, engaging and useful? We speak to Cathy Li, head of Media, Entertainment and Sport at the World Economic Forum, who is leading an initiative called Defining and Building the Metaverse. That is bringing together companies, governments and civil society around the world, to discuss possible futures for the metaverse. The first fruits of that work will be unveiled in Davos in January.   Source: World Economic Forum

Deepfakes Are Being Used For Good – Here’s How

In the second season of BBC mystery thriller The Capture, deepfakes threaten the future of democracy and UK national security. In a dystopia set in present day London, hackers use AI to insert these highly realistic false images and videos of people into live news broadcasts to destroy the careers of politicians. But my team’s research has shown how difficult it is to create convincing deepfakes in reality. In fact, technology and creative professionals have started collaborating on solutions to help people spot bogus videos of politicians and celebrities. We stand a decent chance of staying one step ahead of…

99.9% Of Content Will Be AI-Generated By 2025: Does Anyone Care?

When AI bots can auto-generate unlimited amounts of synthetic content for virtually free, everything about the way the internet looks — and everything about the way we access information — will change. Moreover, it will become impossible to find and identify human-created content in the infinite sea of robot-created articles, books, music, videos, and images. Already most people cannot tell the difference between human-created and bot-created art, music, writing, and video. This creates the pressing need for technology that allows us to find and certify human-made writing, art, and music on the internet. Otherwise, we will not be able to choose if…

These Smart Mini-Robots Could Soon Clean And Inspect Pipes

The maze of pipes underneath our homes and cities are tricky to access and therefore expensive to maintain. A mini-robot, called Joey, has been developed that can independently find its way through underground pipes. The robot is cheap to produce, smart, small and light – allowing it to move through pipes despite the challenging terrain it’s faced with. Researchers from the University of Leeds have developed the first mini-robot, called Joey, that can find its own way independently through networks of narrow pipes underground, to inspect any damage or leaks. Joeys are cheap to produce, smart, small, and light, and…

What Are Decision Trees In Machine Learning?

A decision Tree is a supervised machine learning algorithm that works on the basis of recursively answering some questions (if-else conditions). The algorithm is used both for regression and classification. However mostly for classification problems. The questions in boxes are called the internal nodes where the answers to the questions split it into branches. The nodes which do not split anymore are called leaf, which represent the decision/output of the model. This tree of course is much bigger and more complex for bigger datasets when compared to our simple example above. The tree grows and forms according to the data…

AI Says Dino Footprints Don’t Belong To A Predator

Prehistoric footprints attributed to a vicious dinosaur predator are actually from a timid herbivore, artificial intelligence indicates. University of Queensland paleontologist Anthony Romilio used AI pattern recognition to re-analyze footprints from the Dinosaur Stampede National Monument, south-west of Winton in Central Queensland. “Large dinosaur footprints were first discovered back in the 1970s at a track site called the Dinosaur Stampede National Monument, and for many years they were believed to be left by a predatory dinosaur, like Australovenator, with legs nearly two meters long,” says Romilio. “The mysterious tracks were thought to be left during the mid-Cretaceous Period, around 93 million years ago. But working…

Flexible AI Computer Chips Promise Wearable Health Monitors That Protect Privacy

The Research Brief is a short take about interesting academic work. The big idea My colleagues and I have developed a flexible, stretchable electronic device that runs machine-learning algorithms to continuously collect and analyze health data directly on the body. The skinlike sticker, developed in my lab at the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, includes a soft, stretchable computing chip that mimics the human brain. To create this type of device, we turned to electrically conductive polymers that have been used to build semiconductors and transistors. These polymers are made to be stretchable, like a rubber band.…
