Saving The Desert With AI And Drones

A team of wildlife conservationists — with the help of Intel — are scouring the desert floor in Scottsdale, Arizona, to eliminate an environmental threat called buffelgrass. In a 30,000-acre wilderness desert preserve in Scottsdale, Arizona, drones occasionally fly overhead to search for an invasive plant species that causes wildfires and chokes and kills nearby native plants. The environmental threat is buffelgrass. Employees and volunteers in the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy — with the help of Intel — are using drones and AI to scour the desert floor to find and eliminate the non-native grass. What would take conservancy volunteers years to…

9 Ways AI Can Interact With Culture

Since 2018, Google Arts & Culture Lab has been exploring the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in an artistic and cultural context. Both as a tool and a collaborator, AI — like other emerging and revolutionizing technologies before it — opens up a multitude of possibilities for artists, technologists and cultural institutions, whether that’s within the creative process, to solve a challenge, or as a new way of engaging with audiences. Many of our collaborations originate from singular questions: What’s it like to hear color? How can an artist’s archive inspire the creative process? Can I…

Earth Likely To Cross Critical Climate Thresholds Even If Emissions Decline, Stanford Study Finds

A new study has found that emission goals designed to achieve the world’s most ambitious climate target – 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels – may in fact be required to avoid more extreme climate change of 2 degrees Celsius. Already, the world is 1.1 degrees Celsius hotter on average than it was before fossil fuel combustion took off in the 1800s. More extreme rainfall and flooding are among the litany of impacts from that warming.  The study, published Jan. 30 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, provides new evidence that global warming is on track to reach 1.5 degrees…

How Artificial Intelligence Can Help Us Prepare For Climate Adaptation

Over the next few decades, climate change is poised to be a major business disruptor, with the potential financial impact of climate change being estimated to range in the trillions of dollars for the U.S. economy alone. To adapt to this new reality, more granular climate insights need to be generated to empower stakeholders to take a more data-driven approach to climate adaptation. Due to the scale of this data, as well as the complexity of climate phenomena, AI must be leveraged to enable early-warning systems and predictive modelling that is more accessible and optimises reaction times. Despite climate mitigation…

Developing Countries Are Being Left Behind In The AI Race – And That’s A Problem For All Of Us

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is much more than just a buzzword nowadays. It powers facial recognition in smartphones and computers, translation between foreign languages, systems which filter spam emails and identify toxic content on social media, and can even detect cancerous tumours. These examples, along with countless other existing and emerging applications of AI, help make people’s daily lives easier, especially in the developed world. As of October 2021, 44 countries were reported to have their own national AI strategic plans, showing their willingness to forge ahead in the global AI race. These include emerging economies like China and India, which…

ABB Secures $30A Million Order For Satellite Imaging Technology Helping Detect Environmental Changes In Near Real-Time

ABB has been awarded a contract worth around $30 million by the Canadian data and analytics company EarthDaily Analytics Corp. (EDA) to develop and manufacture next-generation multispectral imaging systems to be placed on 10 satellites (including an in-orbit spare) that will circle the Earth. The order was booked in the first quarter of 2022. Multispectral imaging systems capture data at specific light frequencies across a wide spectrum, and the EarthDaily Constellation network of satellites will be able to provide high-quality imagery in 22 spectral bands with resolution down to five meters. “We are proud to collaborate with ABB on the…

SAP Accelerates Its Move To An Emission-Free Car Fleet, Doubling Down On Sustainability Efforts

SAP SE (NYSE: SAP) announced that starting in 2025, all new vehicles ordered as company cars will be emission free.* Making a fleet of 27,000 cars more carbon neutral will move SAP closer to its own ambitious climate targets and complements the company’s move to make sustainability central to its solution portfolio. As world and business leaders gather in Glasgow for the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26) to discuss their climate ambitions, SAP also continues taking concrete action to combat climate change. A large proportion of SAP’s own direct emissions is made up of its car fleet’s fuel consumption. To…

Satellites May Have Underestimated Warming In The Lower Atmosphere

New research by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) climate scientists and collaborators shows that satellite measurements of the temperature of the troposphere (the lowest region of the atmosphere) may have underestimated global warming over the last 40 years. The research appears in the Journal of Climate The team studied four different properties of tropical climate change. Each property is a ratio between trends in two “complementary” variables. Complementary variables — like tropical temperature and moisture — are expected to show correlated behavior. This correlated behavior is governed by basic, well-understood physical processes. The first three properties considered by the team…

New Views Of Mars Thanks To Intel Tech

After the Perseverance rover’s landing on Mars, the world marveled at the remarkable new images from the planet’s surface. Earthlings can’t get enough of the Red Planet. And unbeknownst to most — even to some of the engineers who’ve been involved (more on that later) — NASA’s Mars 2020 Perseverance rover contains a vital piece of Intel-based tech that’s helping get these images beamed back to us. After traveling 293 million miles from Earth, the Perseverance spacecraft plummeted at 10,000 mph (16,000 kph) into the thin Martian atmosphere on Feb. 18, 2021. It deployed a 70-foot-wide red-striped parachute, slowed to 200 mph…
