How 4 Startups Are Using AI To Solve Climate Change Challenges

Startups are using AI and machine learning to solve some of the world’s biggest challenges — like climate change. While there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to global warming, startups around the world are responsibly developing AI solutions to tackle some of the toughest problems related to climate change. Here’s a look at how four startups from the Google for Startups Accelerator: Climate Change programs in Europe and North America are using AI technology. Refiberd cofounders Sarika Bajaj and Tushita Gupta Ending global textile waste: Refiberd 186 million pounds of textile waste is generated each year, and less than 1% is recycled into new clothing. California startup Refiberd — founded by a team…

Worry Not, The AI Apocalypse! Even The Dinosaurs Were No Match For The Heavens!

There are several existential threats to humanity that are of great concern, but here are some of the most significant ones: 1. Nuclear War: The use of nuclear weapons in a conflict could lead to catastrophic consequences, not only killing millions of people but also causing a nuclear winter that could cause widespread famine and environmental devastation. 2. Climate Change: The rise in global temperatures due to human activities, such as burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial activities, is causing severe environmental and social impacts. These include more frequent and intense natural disasters, sea-level rise, crop failures, water scarcity, and the displacement…

Farming From Space: How Orbital Data Is Unlocking Novel Agriculture Insights

High-performance computing (HPC) and orbital data deliver unprecedented insights into weather patterns, improving planning, forecasting, and decision-making, in an ever-evolving agriculture supply chain. Consequently, global food security may be one of the defining challenges of the coming decades. By 2050, The World Bank estimates that global food production will have to rise by a staggering 70 percent to feed the growing global population. Although population growth in several Western countries is slowing down or declining, many emerging markets are experiencing exponential growth in their populations. By the turn of the century, it is expected that many of the most populated cities in the world will…

Earth Likely To Cross Critical Climate Thresholds Even If Emissions Decline, Stanford Study Finds

A new study has found that emission goals designed to achieve the world’s most ambitious climate target – 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels – may in fact be required to avoid more extreme climate change of 2 degrees Celsius. Already, the world is 1.1 degrees Celsius hotter on average than it was before fossil fuel combustion took off in the 1800s. More extreme rainfall and flooding are among the litany of impacts from that warming.  The study, published Jan. 30 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, provides new evidence that global warming is on track to reach 1.5 degrees…

For Adaptation & Agriculture Day, Atlas AI Is Taking Action To Help Adapt Our Agricultural Systems To A Changing Climate

Editor’s note: At Google Cloud we’re working with global organizations to help them use technology to build a more sustainable future. During the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP27, representatives from countries and organizations around the world — including Google Cloud — gathered in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt from November 7 – 18, 2022 for the latest round of climate talks. Check here for perspectives from onsite, thoughts from Google experts and customers, curated content and announcements. Or catch the event for yourself on Youtube. At COP27 over the weekend, the discussion turned to adaptation and agriculture — a…

How Artificial Intelligence Can Help Us Prepare For Climate Adaptation

Over the next few decades, climate change is poised to be a major business disruptor, with the potential financial impact of climate change being estimated to range in the trillions of dollars for the U.S. economy alone. To adapt to this new reality, more granular climate insights need to be generated to empower stakeholders to take a more data-driven approach to climate adaptation. Due to the scale of this data, as well as the complexity of climate phenomena, AI must be leveraged to enable early-warning systems and predictive modelling that is more accessible and optimises reaction times. Despite climate mitigation…

How To Get More Electric Cars On The Road

A new study from researchers at MIT uncovers the kinds of infrastructure improvements that would make the biggest difference in increasing the number of electric cars on the road, a key step toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transportation. The researchers found that installing charging stations on residential streets, rather than just in central locations such as shopping malls, could have an outsized benefit. They also found that adding on high-speed charging stations along highways and making supplementary vehicles more easily available to people who need to travel beyond the single-charge range of their electric vehicles could greatly increase…

It Takes A Lot Of Energy For Machines To Learn – Here’s Why AI Is So Power-Hungry

This month, Google forced out a prominent AI ethics researcher after she voiced frustration with the company for making her withdraw a research paper. The paper pointed out the risks of language-processing artificial intelligence, the type used in Google Search and other text analysis products. Among the risks is the large carbon footprint of developing this kind of AI technology. By some estimates, training an AI model generates as much carbon emissions as it takes to build and drive five cars over their lifetimes. I am a researcher who studies and develops AI models, and I am all too familiar…

AI’s Untapped Potential In The Battle Against Food Waste

Climate change and food waste are among the most pressing issues facing the world today and businesses have a fundamental role to play in tackling them. A recent survey on emerging technology trends by GlobalData reveals that while most executives believe their companies are ready for “digital disruption”, one of the  least prepared industries is the foodservice sector. The survey shows it has the highest percentage of respondents (35%) admitting to being unprepared. However, over half of the foodservice sector executives surveyed are planning on increasing investment in disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision, allowing them…

Big Data Says Time’s Running Out To Save The Environment

Big data can help scientists chart not only the degradation of the environment but also help achieve sustainability, according to a new paper. Lead author Rebecca Runting from the University of Melbourne’s School of Geography says that while we currently have an unprecedented ability to generate, store, access, and analyze data about the environment, these technological advances will not help the world unless they lead to action. “Big data analyses must be closely linked to environmental policy and management,” Runting says. “For example, many large companies already possess the methodological, technical, and computational capacity to develop solutions, so it is…
